How does the West stack up now that Yao could miss the whole year? – Dustin
It’s the end of June, and multiple players will switch teams before training camp starts, so doing power rankings this early is foolish.
Just kidding. I’m in.
1. Los Angeles Lakers – Even if Odom leaves, Kobe, Pau and Bynum make them the favorites.
2. San Antonio Spurs – I love the trade for Richard Jefferson. The key, though, is still Manu Ginobili’s health. If he is running on all cylinders come playoff time, San Antonio is good enough to challenge the Lakers.
3. Denver Nuggets – I’m worried that they can’t keep their intensity up for a whole year again. We’ll see, but I’m not completely sold yet.
4. Portland Trailblazers – A year more mature. Greg Oden doesn’t even have to be a superstar, but if he can be a solid center Portland should continue its ascension.
5. Utah Jazz – I thought the window would be open for awhile, but if Boozer leaves this team may begin sliding down the standings. This is a make-or-break season.
6. New Orleans Hornets – This team is about to get gutted, but Chris Paul is still the best point guard in the league, and that will get them in the playoffs.
7. Dallas Mavericks – The Mavs have to do something because Dirk is getting older and Josh Howard isn’t second-fiddle caliber.
8. Houston Rockets – I know the Rockets play well in stretches without Yao and T-Mac, but not the whole season. A team on the rise is now in shambles with Yao on the sidelines.
9. Golden State Warriors – Monta should be back healthy for the whole year, and if they pull the trigger on a deal for Amare, this team could sneak into the playoffs.
10. Oklahoma City ThunderSonics – One more year of on-the-job training before this squad takes the leap in 2010. What’s scary is the ThunderSonics have Phoenix’s draft pick next year, too.
11. Phoenix Suns – If the purple and orange had their pick still, they’d be in full-blown tank mode. Right now it’s a weird state of limbo.
12. Minnesota Timberwolves – Who knows what’s going to happen with Rubio, but this squad was actually doing well until Al Jefferson went down. If he’s healthy, they won’t be terrible.
13. Memphis – O.J. Mayo might take 40 shots a game this year.
14. Los Angeles Clippers – In terms of personnel, this team doesn’t look too bad. Oh, wait. It’s the Clippers. Lotteryland again.
15. Sacramento – This team will challenge to be historically bad. Should be fun to watch. Kevin Martin is the only player on that team that is a legitimate NBA starter. Yuck.
