Who is the most desirable free agent in the NBA this season? – Mike
This answer may surprise you: It’s Rasheed Wallace.
He’s a headcase, sure, but when you get him when he’s motivated, Sheed can be a huge difference-maker. Just ask Detroit.
Sheed has such a diverse skill set, and if he signs with a team like the Spurs, they’ll get him to play hard, at least for this season. He will be one of the few free agents who is worth what he signs for.
And with that out of the way, let’s look at the three players that won’t nearly live up to the contracts they sign.
Ben Gordon (Rumored contract: $11 million annually for multiple years).
It seemed to be a disastrous move when BG turned down a contract extension from the Bulls. However, he had a magical series against Boston in this year’s playoffs and will parlay that into a big deal. This won’t change the fact that he’s too short to be a great shooting guard and is an ideal sixth man, but it will change how much money he makes for it.
Hedo Turkoglu (Rumored contract: 5 years, $50 million). I respect Hedo for the way he’s been able to improve every year and turn himself into an All-Star caliber player. However, he’s already 30 years old. So yeah, you get him playing at this level (16 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists per game) for two years, but then he starts declining. The Blazers are young with great salary cap flexibility. They should not strap themselves with Hedo for the last three years at $10 million annually. Don’t do it.
Jason Kidd (Rumored contract: 3 years, $25 million): Why, oh why, is anyone giving Kidd this much money? The crazier part? The offer is from Dallas. Clearly, the Mavericks aren’t contenders any more. The Kidd-Howard-Dirk-Terry core is not working, so why try to bring it back? Let Kidd go, trade Howard and try it a different way. The trade of Harris for Kidd was disastrous, Mark Cuban. Quit trying to hang on like it was a good decision. Cut your losses. If the Knicks give Kidd a one-year deal, I’m fine with that, but if anyone offers him more than two years for $12 million, they’re plain stupid.
