Comment of the Week
Comment of the Week No. 14
Written by Bush Rod

Lots to choose from this week. Big shout out to everyone who came out.

We're going with Rufus' input on what All-Star event he would take part in: If I were Albert Pujols, I would hit one out of the park one-handed, or lefty, or something. Something exciting for the kids. As far as the dunk contest: let's just say fire and an open pool of noxious, flammable chemicals would be involved and leave it at that, so as to spare ruining the surprise for everyone when I'm invited. RTJ has that kind of sway on the commissioner's office, right?

Co-Comments of the Week

It was tough deciding on the Comment of the Week winner because there were only two comments posted. So what did I do? Chose them both, naturally.

Here's Kimbo and Dusty squaring off after  my post about the Cubs.

Kimbo: Who is this "Dusty" character asking you a question?  You are clearly making up questions at this point. And, I'm perfectly OK with that.

Dusty: I am a real person, dumba$$.

I was on vacation so this is a couple days late, but at least we had another commenter so this CotW stays alive for another week. We are on a roll now.

In my post about the most desirable free agent, I said Rasheed Wallace is "a headcase, sure, but when you get him when he’s motivated, Sheed can be a huge difference-maker. Just ask Detroit."

Well, Kimbo went ahead and contacted the organization, ripping my rationale to pieces: I just asked Detroit and they said Rasheed Wallace cannot be a huge difference-maker. Now what?

All right! My main man 'Common Sense' drops by with the first RTJ comment in months, and now I can resume the Comment of the Week feature.

I'm pumped.

What's more, he actually clowned me pretty good, using perfect grammar, clever digs and spot-on analysis. What a true American hero.

Common Sense on my attempt at analyzing soccer without watching it: "Let me give you some analysis on the sport, although I haven't watched a match in about three years." This suggests that you shouldn't be making that analysis. "Obviously, beating France was a freak occurrence." You mean Spain? Kinda proves my point, right? This post is an epic fail.  If you don't want to pay attention to soccer and hockey, fine, but to then post about it just makes you look ignorant.

Man, this party really died…

Oh, I guess I actually have to post stuff in order for people to comment.

Luckily, since I was too lazy to actually do a Comment of the Week last Monday, we have even more to choose from!

This is the final contestant in the race for the free George Steinbrenner book.

Rufus gets the nod by upping the ante on my proposed Brandon Webb for Josh Hamilton swap:

Rufus: Make it Josh Hamilton and a kilo of crack and we might have something cookin'.

I will post up the other three comments along with this one in a few hours, and then everyone can vote in the poll on the top left side of the home page.

Voting will close on Sunday, and I expect each contestant to do as much rigging as they can in order to win. Because even if you don’t want the book, it’s one less gift you need to buy for someone else's birthday.

That free George Steinbrenner book has really pushed the commenting into high gear! What's that you say? It's because I called out an entire sport, and felt the Canadian wrath like never before? Well, whatever works.

rupprupp29 takes home the Comment of the Week for flushing out my master plan before it ever got going. He should change his name to Sherlock Holmes29.

rupprupp29: Unfortunately, some second rate blogs like this one need to resort to stirring the pot between hockey fans and people who blindly follow whatever is fed to them in order to get a few extra comments and page views.

Feel free to stand for what you believe, but do so with the knowledge that you're doing exactly what this a**hole wants (as I just did). Hockey fans are the most loyal fans in all of sports, and it's a shame that some people need to take advantage of this fact in order to increase their view count by a couple hundred.

Comment of the Week No. 10

Apologies for my lack of posts lately. I am trying to buy a house, so my time is being spent driving through shady neighborhoods and examining door frames rather than answeing questions.

If you 40 people are willing to pony up $1,000 a year, I will quit my job and do this full-time, giving you at least four posts a day. Let me know if anyone is interested.

Here's the comment of the week, and although it isn't his original work, Rufus Wheeler Peckham dug up some gold about the party animal New York Mets of the mid-1980's. And we thought today's NBA stars knew how to party.

Rufus joins Quigley as the first two entrants into the deathmatch (OK, not quite) for a free George Steinbrenner book.

Rufus: “Can you name another sport or era where there were so many bona fide superstars that you would love to party with?”

Easy, easy answer: mid-80’s major league baseball. I’ll pull a few quotes from “Boozing in the Big Leagues”, Rich English’s insider tell-all account of the ‘86 Mets’ run to the champsionship. You can read a larger selection here:

“They kept a refrigerator stocked with beer in their locker room at Shea. After games, players stayed late into the night emptying it. Many times the team trainer arrived the next morning to find men passed out all over the floor, half-naked, surrounded by crushed Budweiser cans. The trainer would get them on their feet and into the showers. When they were awake, a shot of B-12, a couple of cigarettes and a six-pack got them ready for the day’s double-header. These guys played with hangovers so often it began to seem like their normal physical state.”

Quigley McMannis is the first entrant into the race for the free George Steinbrenner book after picking up the Comment of the Week. He was quite tricky, choosing a post that was done two weeks ago, but waiting to comment until last week. I'm pretty sure he studied the other comments, knew he couldn't win, and waited for a diluted week of comments to fire off his post. It's much like college players coming out for the NBA or NFL draft - there's an art to it.

Here is Quigley, ahem, 'defending' Ozzie Guillen kissing another man: Ozzie is kissing his son after the White Sox won the World Series. As a loyal cubs fan, I won't take a cheap shot about same-sex incest. I'm above laughing about how Ozzie Guillen is laying it on his own flesh and blood pretty good, or how he's a loud, cry baby psycho path. I won't.

Kimbo comes up with an unprecedented second straight Comment of the Week. What does he win for doing so? Nothing. However, keep it up Kimbo, because the next four Commenters of the Week will be in the running to win a biography of George Steinbrenner. Details will follow, so check back.

Anyways, on to Kimbo's comment, after he found 'hidden gem' Gary Sheffield in our N.L.-only Fantasy Baseball League:: Jay Bruce - NL MVP. P.S: Gary Sheffield will hit 34 home runs in his only 34 at-bats this season. Or his shoulder will rot off and he will blame it on the
"Whities." Likely the latter.

The Comment of the Week comes from Kimbo, who's infatuation with Jay Bruce has officially escalated to stalker status. He did go 1-for-4 today. No word on girlfriends or terrorists.

Kimbo commenting on my MLB predictions: Jay Bruce - NL MVP. Projected stat line: 258 home runs, 677 RBIs, 13 impregnated girlfriends and 28 terrorists killed (running riot).
