Slim pickings
Written by Bush Rod
Wednesday, 15 July 2009 15:28

What did you go with on Streak for the Cash, being as today is the most boring sports day of the year. I am currently sweating out the WNBA game between Washington and San Antonio. Goooo Stars! - Toby, Salem, Ore.

It is pretty much slim pickings today, although I feel like I have a better chance at picking WNBA games correctly than baseball.

Currently I have DeMar DeRozan scoring more than 15 points in tonight's Summer League game against the Suns. Why? Because Phoenix is really emphasizing the run-and-gun this year, which means the contest should be pretty high scoring.

Since I went 0-for-2 on predictions over the All-Star Break, I'll go ahead and add this one in since I feel pretty good about it. In DeMar We Trust.

Get off my tail

The hardcore fans of RTJ will remember the problem I had with the Taco Bell drive-thru workers asking ‘How are you?’ and then sitting in silence until I decided to order, no matter how painfully long it took.

Well, after a call to corporate, I swear that problem was cleared up. Now every time I go, they will answer me. Imagine that.

After that was my problem with the Buffalo Wild Wings commercial, and considering it is my top viewed post, I’m guessing others agree.

So I’ve got a new beef.

The aluminum bat Home Run Derby
Written by Bush Rod

I'll be glued to the tube for the Home Run Derby, but I can't help but worry it might lose its luster in this, the "post-steroid era" (supposedly). Two words: "aluminum bats". Good idea? - Rufus W.P., Tempe, Ariz.

You want to cheapen the game that much? Well of course I'm on board!

A few questions:

- Instead of the net, what would you put in front of the batting practice pitchers to help protect them? I'm thinking the Michelin Man.

Dunk you very much

If you could be in one All-Star-type event, what would it be? Like home run derby or whatever. - Lorenzo

I think the home run derby would be fun, as would the 3-point shootout (something I would actually have a prayer at not finishing last in), but the slam dunk contest still takes the cake for me.

MLB at the break

OK, well here was my MLB season preview.

What we've learned since:

- The Indians and Diamondbacks are horrible: Both teams started slow and never recovered. Hello, 2010.

- The Giants can't hit, but it doesn't matter: Lincecum and Cain have been so good that San Francisco doesn't even need to hit to win.

Co-Comments of the Week

It was tough deciding on the Comment of the Week winner because there were only two comments posted. So what did I do? Chose them both, naturally.

Here's Kimbo and Dusty squaring off after  my post about the Cubs.

Kimbo: Who is this "Dusty" character asking you a question?  You are clearly making up questions at this point. And, I'm perfectly OK with that.

Dusty: I am a real person, dumba$$.

Best sports hairstyles

What is your favorite sports hairdo? - Lancaster, Tully, Md.

I'll give you a top-5.

No. 5: Kobe Bryant's halfro

I loved Kobe's haircut early in his career. It was so different. Now he has a shaved head like everyone else. That's reason enough for me to dislike him. But the halfro was sweet.

My All-Star game starting pitchers

If you were Joe Maddon and Charlie Manuel, who would you choose to start the All-Star games? – Chris

Do I have to be Charlie Manuel? I saw an interview he did and it sounded like he didn't even know what was going on. Seriously, how much do managers actually matter in major league baseball?

Do you know why the Phillies won the World Series? Because they have Chase Utley and Ryan Howard and Brad Lidge and Cole Hamels and Jimmy Rollins. Managers are so overrated.

If you put me in charge of a team for a day, I guarantee you I wouldn't have a huge affect on the outcome.

But I digress.

In the American League, Zack Greinke is the no-brainer. Roy Halladay has been very good, but not as good as Greinke. And he missed some time due to injury.

The National League is a tougher call.

On Lance Armstrong
Written by Bush Rod

Oversaturation has taken the luster off the incredible story of Lance Armstrong.

If his life was a book, this would truly read as a remarkable tale. A brief synopsis:

-    Testicular cancer threatens life
-    Overcomes cancer
-    Tour de France champion seven times over
-    Retirement
-    Doping allegations
-    Sheryl Crow
-    Kate Hudson
-    Lots of other women
-    LiveStrong Foundation with cool yellow bracelets
-    Tour de France comeback
-    ???????

Of course, the last chapter would be a victory in this year’s Tour de France, as Armstrong bucks the odds again and further cements himself as the most gifted cycler ever.

One problem. It’s quite possible he’s not the best bicyclist on his team any more.

On the Coyotes mess

BRW, what's your take on the mess with the Coyotes? I know you've been dying to discuss it. - Jerome, Mesa, Ariz.

Yes, I have. If I hadn't been busy watching the hair on the top of my head grow, I surely would have been blogging about this topic daily.

Really, though, what's to discuss? There was an offer by a Toronto businessman to buy the team for something like $220 million. Right now, no one else is offering close to that.
